["PULP FICTION" POSTER]

To those who say that film can never match literature in import, I say that intelligence and insight, like schlock, can be expressed in any medium. Who is to say that, had film existed in days past, some of history's best known writers, poets and playwrights would not have been film directors? The directors I admire most are (in no particular order) Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini, Lina Wertmuller, Bernardo Bertolucci, Roman Polanski, David Cronenberg, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Pedro Almodovar, Jean Renoir, Joel Coen, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Francois Truffaut, Louis Malle, Stanley Kubrick, Marcel Ophuls, Woody Allen, John Waters, Atom Egoyan, Peter Greenaway, Luis Bunuel, Jim Jarmusch, Quentin Tarantino, Todd Haynes, Todd Solondz, David Lynch, Hal Hartley and Sylvester Stallone (kidding).

My favorite films are (in no particular order) La Strada, Persona, The Seventh Seal, Virgin Spring, From the Life of the Marionettes, Cabaret, Annie Hall, Manhattan, Eraserhead, The Bicycle Thief, Lies My Father Told Me, Night and Fog, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Last Tango In Paris, Let's Get Lost, Montenegro, Sling Blade, Diary of a Mad Housewife, Crumb, The Sorrow and the Pity, Repulsion, Fargo, Atlantic City, Vertical Features Remake, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Schvitz, The Last Klezmer, Gotham Fish Tales, The Quarrel, Naked, Trainspotting, Johnny Got His Gun, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, To Sir With Love, Harold and Maude, The Wansee Conference, Swept Away, Seven Beauties, The Sound of Music, Pressure Point, The Night Porter, Horse Feathers, Duck Soup, This Is Spinal Tap, Poison, What Happened Was..., Tomorrow, Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, The Graduate, Bark!, In the Realm of the Senses, Salo, Pink Flamingos, Happiness, Chuck & Buck, the Kieslowski trilogy of Blue, White and Red and Pulp Fiction (pictured above).

There was this fabulous film I saw recently cast only with parrots -- I can't recall its name but if the reader knows, please e-mail me. I also have this inexplicable thing for claymation (what is its appeal?). I am always on the lookout for exotic films -- of quality, whether straight or camp -- so if you have something you can highly recommend, tell me about it in an e-mail.
